Hoop Net Fishing Information

    Description

    • A hoop net is a cylindrical nylon mesh net that is stretched over four to seven hoops. One end is open and the other is tied closed. The hoops can range from two to three feet in diameter. Within the cylinder there are two funnel-shaped nets, or throats, for trapping the fish. Most nets are collapsible for easy storage. The nets come in varying lengths, with some as long as 16 feet.

    How It Works

    • The net can be hung over the water from a tree limb or suspended between two objects. It can also be suspended from a weighted buoy to hold it in position. A bait bag is placed in the hoop net. A fish enters the net through the funnel-shaped throat. When it is unable to get back out, it will go through the second throat, which closes behind it and traps it inside.

    Uses

    • Hoop nets are used to trap fish and crustaceans by recreational and commercial fishermen. The smaller nets are useful for catching bait fish. The larger nets are used to catch larger fish, crabs and lobsters. The nets are also useful for catching "trash" fish that you want to clear from your pond. Check local laws before using hoop nets as there may be restrictions in your area.
