How to Modify Bitumen Flat Roofing

    • 1). Remove all dirt and debris from the roof with the push broom.

    • 2). Roll out flame resistant roofing felt on the roof surface. Secure the felt with capped roofing nails. Hammer capped nails in 6-inch intervals straight down the sides and center of the sheets.

    • 3). Lay flashing material along the edge of the roof. Hammer roofing nails every 8 inches to secure the flashing.

    • 4). Spray primer along the inside flange of the edge flashing.

    • 5). Roll out a sheet of modified-bitumen roofing material on the roof. Over-lap the edge of the roof 2 inches. Cut the material with the utility knife.

    • 6). Position the sheet of modified-bitumen roofing material straight down the flashing. Flatten the sheet. Overhang the flashing by 1/2 inch. Roll the roofing material halfway back. Ensure that the material is tight.

    • 7). Light the propane torch with the spark igniter. Adjust the torch until the flame turns blue.

    • 8). Fuse the modified-bitumen roofing material together with the felt. Slowly move the flame of the torch down the intersection of the roofing roll with the sheathing. Roll the roofing material forward slowly along the width of the roll when heat bubbles begin to rise on the material. Seal the edges by pressing down on the flashing with your foot as you heat the material.

    • 9). Roll out the sheets of modified-bitumen roofing material on the roof. Overlap the edges of the previously rolled sheets. Torch and roll the sheets. Heat the seams fully to ensure bonding. Tighten the seams by pressing them with your foot as you move forward.

Lay strips of roofing material over the edges of the flashing. Leave an overhang of 1/2 inch. Torch the strips onto the flashing and the roofing. Press the strips down to seal.
