Plates

• The plates you choose for this project need to be oven safe, since baking is required to set the paint. Choose plain stoneware, ceramic or glass plates for best results. You can purchase new, plain plates to decorate, buy plates second hand, or give plates you already own a painted makeover. Create a single decorative accent plate or make an entire set to give a fresh look to your every day or holiday table.
  
  

Paint

• The paint used for this project needs to be specifically designed for painting glass and ceramic wear. Regular craft acrylic paint won't work; the paint needs to specify that it is for use with glass and non-porous surfaces and that it can be fired or set in a home oven. There are several paint brands available for completing this type of project. Each brand has a complete color line and specific directions regarding the required amount of drying time and the cooking temperature for completed items.
  
  

Process

• Clean the plate with glass cleaner to remove any residue and help the paint adhere. Paint your design, using a pattern if desired. Let the paint dry according to the manufacturer's directions, most call for 12 hours of drying time. Pre-heat the oven and then bake the plate for the time indicated by the manufacturer. If a glaze finish is desired, add it to the plate after the plate has cooled and then bake the plate again following the manufacturer's directions.
  
  

Use and Care

• Use your completed plates as decorations or as chargers. Most oven bake paint manufacturers do not recommend serving food directly on completed items. You can place an inexpensive clear glass plate on top of your painted one to show off the design without letting food contact the paint. Finished painted plates should be hand washed as needed; do not immerse or soak in water.
