Cat urine is an unpleasant downside to cat ownership. Even housetrained cats can occasionally slip up and urinate outside the cat box because of a medical condition, major household change or elderly incontinence, according to VetInfo. Removing the stain and odor is important, because if any odor remains, the cat could smell it and have a repeat accident. While it is easier to remove fresh urine, some home remedies help clean and remove old cat urine stains.

    Hydrogen Peroxide

    • A mixture of 15 ounces of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, 2 tablespoons of baking soda and 2 squirts of liquid hand soap helps to remove cat pee from fabric, carpet and upholstery, according to Cat World. Pour the mixture directly onto carpet and let dry before vacuuming it up. Make a spray from the ingredients and spray onto fabric or upholstery to clean and deodorize, then rinse with warm water. This mixture does not keep, so discard any leftovers. The hydrogen peroxide can sometimes change the color of fabric or upholstery, so test a small, hidden section before applying the mixture to the cat urine stain.

    Vinegar

    • After blotting up any fresh urine, a mixture of one part white vinegar and two parts hot water applied to the cat urine can remove the stain, according to the Cat Health Guide. Once you have wet the area with the solution, blot it up with paper towels until it is almost dry. Sprinkle baking soda onto the urine stain and leave for approximately 24 hours before vacuuming. The baking soda helps neutralize the odor.

    Baking Soda

    • Baking soda provides a home remedy to remove cat urine from washable items such as clothing or bedding, according to the Sacramento Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Add a 1 pound box of baking soda to your regular laundry detergent to remove cat urine stains and odors. Let washable items air dry after washing with baking soda for best results.
