Will Boric Acid Clean Bathtubs?

    Boric Acid

    • Boric acid in its powdered form is a natural cleaner that can be used on bathtubs. It is nonabrasive and is safe for use on fiberglass, porcelain and enamel surfaces in your bathroom, including bathtubs. It removes soap scum and restores shine to bathroom surfaces.

    Use

    • To use boric acid to clean a bathtub, wet down the areas of the tub coated with soap scum. Sprinkle powdered boric acid on a scrub brush, then use the brush on the soap scum. It will take some effort on your part to remove all the scum. Boric acid rinses away clean with water.

    Considerations

    • Boric acid can also be used as an insecticide. It will make people and pets ill if they eat it, so do not use it when they are around. To avoid the risk of respiratory irritation, wear a mask and keep the bathroom well-ventilated when using boric acid to clean a bathtub.
