- Start by taking a picture of the area of your home you'd like cleared. We often are used to walking through a room and even walking around the clutter without paying attention to it. When looking at a picture, it's easy to see the things that are out of place. Using a red pen, circle any items you would like removed. Work to remove them and take another photo. Continue on this path until the room is tidy. Store needed items readily available but out of sight. Try to keep tabletops and desktops clear.
- There's no need to be overwhelmed by the clutter in your house--just start with a small goal you know you can complete. In Chinese culture, the number nine signifies completion and is used frequently throughout Feng Shui. Once a day, try clearing your clutter for nine minutes. This can mean sorting items to be given to charity and others to be thrown away. You will soon notice the progress, and decluttering will become habit. Remember, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
- As you begin your decluttering process, ask yourself why you're holding onto certain items. There is generally an emotional significance to the clutter in our homes. Does keeping grandma's cracked china make you feel closer to her? Will you forget all your wonderful memories if you threw it away? Ask yourself these questions, and get rid of as much stuff as you can. Feng Shui states that new energy cannot come into our lives until we rid ourselves of the old.
