- 1). Cover a full-sun, well-drained garden bed with a 4-inch layer of compost. Sprinkle 4 cups of 10-10-10 analysis fertilizer over every 100 square feet of garden bed, then till the compost and fertilizer into the top 8 inches of the soil.
- 2). Create 4-inch-high and 2-feet-wide hills in the garden by pulling soil from between the hills with a hoe. Space each hill 4 feet apart in all directions.
- 3). Sow four pumpkins seeds per hill, spacing them evenly apart. Sow the seeds to a 2-inch depth.
- 4). Water the bed after sowing. Continue to water as needed to keep the soil moist but not soggy throughout the growing season.
- 5). Thin each hill to two plants once pumpkin seedlings have two leaves. Pull up the smaller or weaker plants, leaving the two strongest in the garden.
- 6). Lay a 2-inch layer of straw mulch over the garden bed after thinning. Mulch preserves moisture in the soil and keeps the developing pumpkins off the ground.
