- 1). Seal cracks and openings in the foundation of your house. This will limit the flow of radon into your home and improve the efficiency of other radon-removal methods. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that only sealing cracks is not enough to effectively remedy radon contamination.
- 2). Increase the ventilation in your home by opening doors, windows and vents. The outdoor air will gradually replace the air indoors and decrease the radon level inside your home. This is a temporary solution, however, as the radon concentration will return to its original level once the doors, windows and vents are closed.
- 3). Install a heat recovery ventilator -- also known as an air-to-air heat exchanger -- to increase ventilation in your home. A heat recovery ventilator distributes fresh outdoor air throughout the home while collecting and exhausting stale indoor air. Air quality is improved and radon levels are reduced.
- 4). Implement house pressurization to prevent radon from entering the house. House pressurization utilizes a fan to blow air into the basement or lowest level of your home. Doors and windows must not be left open for any length of time in order to maintain enough pressure to keep the radon out of the home.
