Being selected as a Best Man can be both exciting and overwhelming; you get to help make your best friend's big day one of the best of his life, but that of course comes with a bit of pressure. Being a great Best Man isn't as difficult as you'd think, but there are a few things you'll need to do:
Help with the Planning - Luckily the brides do a good job of handling the wedding plans, but there are a few areas where your groom will need to take charge. The groom may need to coordinate the tuxedos, arrange the honeymoon and possibly handle the caterers and other vendors. Ask early on what you can do to help with planning, whether it be finding the best deals or showing up to tastings, your groom will appreciate your effort.
Bachelor Party - Bachelor parties can get a groom into a deal of trouble right before his big day, so it's important to stick to the rules on this one. Ask the groom if he's game for a bachelor party and ask what kind of limitations he and the bride may have set for themselves. Some Best Men think they're doing the groom a favor by doing something outrageous, but it's always best to respect the groom's wishes on this matter. You and the groomsmen will most likely be footing the bill for this event, so make sure everyone is willing and able to share the costs.
Lead the Groomsmen - You will most likely be the liaison between the groom and the groomsmen, so it's important to earn their respect. The groomsmen will look to you for instructions on the day of the wedding, so you'll need to pay attention at the rehearsal and answer any questions they may have.
Wedding Day - The day of the wedding can often times feel chaotic; last-minute changes, cancellations, and wedding day jitters can leave a Best Man's hands full. One of the most important things you can do on the day of the wedding is make sure the groom is set to go; he might need one last pep talk or a nice, long conversation over a beer, but whatever he needs, remember that you're his go-to guy.
Once the ceremony is over, it's your time to shine, since you'll probably lead the toasts to the bride and groom. It's important during the wedding to remain composed and charming throughout the reception. You may have attended a wedding as a guest before, where you can party and drink as you please, but the Best Man should stay alert and dependable throughout the entire ceremony.
If you want to go over and above, you can make sure the vendors have been paid, that the bride and groom have transportation to the airport (if they're going directly on their honeymoon), and that the guests all receive their wedding favors. Being there for your best friends is one of the best gifts you can give him, so give it your all and help make this one of the most memorable days of his life.
