- 1). Call the campus police department to inquire about its background check policy. Make sure the department has one in place and that the service is available to the public. If you're seeking information on yourself, the records should be made available with proof of your identification. If the search directed at someone else, inquire about the privacy regulations.
- 2). Verify what information would be provided if the department performs such background searches. Criminal history is usually standard; if you need other information, you may need to explain what you are seeking. Additional checks may require other forms or extra fees.
- 3). Ask to speak to a supervisor if you are refused a background check on yourself or someone else. Politely explain your need for the search and have the supervisor explain why your request is being denied. If it is a school policy that searches are not performed, you will probably need to discuss the issue with school administration.
- 4). Visit the campus police office in person to fill out any required forms for the background check, once you have confirmed a policy is in place to receive one. If the request is for yourself, allow yourself to be fingerprinted and provide all necessary proof of identification so the process is not delayed. If the search is on someone else, you will need a date of birth and Social Security number, at the minimum.
- 5). Obtain a receipt for any fees, and if there is a waiting period for the information, verify when it will be mailed or if you can pick it up.
