Each day millions of Americans try to quit smoking.
Because they all are aware of the terrible things smoking does to your health.
But how does quitting smoking effect your health.
First, within 20 minutes of quitting your blood pressure and pulse rate decreases to a safer level, and the body temperature in your hands and feet increases to normal levels.
This is a result of the carbon monoxide found in cigarettes decreases your bodies ability to deliver oxygen to your extremities.
Second, in about 8 hours, the carbon monoxide level in your blood decreases to normal levels.
Your blood oxygen level will also ne normal.
Next, after a 24 hour period the risk of having a heart attack drops dramatically.
In addition, miraculously, after 24 hours those nerves endings that are damaged start to regrow and your ability to smell and taste starts to return to normal.
Continuing, in a period of time between 2 weeks and 3 months the circulation in your body will greatly improve.
Any coughing or wheezing that you had should disappear.
Your lungs should generally function better and your general stamina should be better.
During the first year your risk for coronary heart disease should drop dramatically to half of what would be the risk of a smoker.
Lastly, in a period between 5 and 15 years you will have reduced your chances of a stroke to that of someone who has never smoked.
Your risk for lung cancer drops significantly.
As does the risk for mouth, throat or cancer of the esophagus.
In general health risks become similar to those of someone who has never smoked before.
