How to Pick String Beans

    • 1). Inspect bean plants daily once beans begin forming, usually within two to three months of planting, depending on the variety. Harvest beans when they're at their full length and firm but not yet bulging with the forming seeds inside the pod.

    • 2). Pick beans in the early afternoon when the morning dew has dried from the plants. Do not pick beans from wet plants, as this can spread bacterial blight.

    • 3). Grasp the stem supporting the mature string bean pod in one hand. Snap the bean from the stem with the other hand. Avoid yanking or pulling on the plant, as you may damage it.

    • 4). Place the picked beans in a wire or plastic basket. Rinse the beans off with a garden hose to remove any surface dirt before bringing them inside.
