- Imagine a favorite superhero having a bad day and design a costume around this concept. A dress suit and glasses with a red cape hanging out the back is Clark Kent the day he didn't properly hide his Superman suit. A Spiderman costume with webs attached all over it creates Spiderman after a web shooter mishap. Take an Iron Man costume and use rust brown paint on various sections of it. The costume is Iron Man after getting caught in a rain storm.
- Combining two seemingly unrelated costumes into one presents a truly unique look. Start with rocker clothing. Options include leather pants, jeans, biker boots, flashy shirts, black t-shirts and leather jackets. Get a rocker wig and some zombie makeup from a Halloween or costume store. Put the rocker look together, then apply zombie makeup to all exposed skin. Add the wig and some sunglasses. Carry a guitar (real or prop) or a pair of drum sticks to accessorize your costume.
- Cardboard boxes work well as the starting point for costumes based on household appliances. Assemble a box or boxes as the torso component of the costume. For a refrigerator, paint the boxes and add a second bit of cardboard to work as the door (if available). Add a handle (this could use a real one). Make a toaster by painting the boxes and adding a wooden lever to push the toast down. Add wood or styrofoam toast-shaped cutouts to the top of the costume.
- Cardboard boxes serve as the body component not only for appliance costumes, but for robot costumes, as well. Assemble the boxes and paint them silver, creating arm and leg holes. Use a silver dryer vent hose for the arms and legs. Paint your face and hands with silver makeup. Using another box, create a square helmet. Wear clunky boots that are painted silver. Add plain electrical wire that is painted silver from one part of the costume to another.
