- 1). Record measurements of the area where you plan to place the cage, and confirm your birds will fit based on their size and the dimensions of your interior cage. Draw a sketch to scale of your cage plans for reference and revision as needed throughout the project. A 6-foot square base that is 10 feet high is usually adequate for most birds. Include a 7-foot-high doorway that is 2 feet wide.
- 2). Cut 10 boards to 10 feet long and eight boards to 6 feet long, or determine another length based on your measurements. Make the door frame by cutting two 7-foot sections and four 2-foot sections, as well as an 8-foot piece.
- 3). Assemble the frame by creating two 10-foot-by-6-foot rectangles and joining them together with 6-foot boards at each corner of the frames to make an open box. Use exterior screws to protect against rust.
- 4). Insert the remaining 10-foot boards vertically at even intervals along three sides of the box to form the cage walls. Screw at the top and bottom to reinforce them.
- 5). Attach a 6-foot board across the front, 2 feet below the top of the cage. Insert the 8-foot section vertically about 2 feet in from the left wall of the cage. Insert a 2-foot piece horizontally between the left edge and the 8-foot section as a brace. Reinforce the doorway by forming a rectangle from the 7-foot and 2-foot sections and attaching them to the main frame with hinges. Screw the remaining 6-foot boards across the top of the cage for the roof. Coat the boards with varnish and allow them to dry.
- 6). Wrap the side walls and roof with chicken coop wire and attach it to the wooden frame using a staple gun. Cut the wire to fit the frame as needed with wire snips, and cut around the door frame so the cage will open.
- 7). Install a door handle and lock to ensure easy access and the security of the birds.
