For those who are new, Yoga focuses on the mind, body and spirit. Originally when I started practicing I was looking for nothing more than a low impact exercise program that I could stick to and get back into a routine of a healthier lifestyle. But what I ended up realizing is Yoga goes way beyond just a healthier lifestyle.
3 Reasons Why Yoga Contributes to Weight Loss
- Yoga practice includes a series of holding poses thereby increases muscle strength and toning very quickly. As we already know increasing muscle mass and strength leads to burning more calories. Based on that fact alone, Yoga and weight loss can go hand in hand.
- It also includes breathing and relaxation exercises which are healing and energizing in themselves. At the very least, just feels good! Simple stretching and relaxation exercise can give our minds and bodies a well deserved break from everyday life reducing stress levels. Decreasing stress can slow down Cortisol hormone production that contributes to weight gain and so many other health issues we face today.
- Each and every one of us is at a different fitness level and each has our own challenges when it comes to our bodies. So for those of us who need something less vigorous or maybe for medical reasons cannot implement a high impact program, Yoga is the perfect solution.
There are so many huge benefits to practicing Yoga I can't possibly list them all, but specifically on the original topic of weight loss. In my opinion, increasing daily activity, even if it is low impact is always better than nothing at all. Increasing muscle mass and strength leads to burning more calories, increased energy and stress reduction are all major players in the weight loss process. Of course you always need to have a healthy eating plan along with any form of exercise program, but if you are still on the fence give it a try. I think you will be pleasantly surprised and have an answer to the question!
