Installation of a Triple Wall Pipe for a Fireplace

    • 1). Determine the best route for your fireplace pipe installation. Locate it in an area that requires minimal bends. Straight up through-the-ceiling installations are the most efficient. Avoid offsets that restrict the natural draft. Install offsets of 30 degrees or less when avoiding rafters and other obstacles. Do not use more than two offsets in a single installation.

    • 2). Determine the type of chimney pipe your appliance requires from your fireplace instruction manual. Obtain the correct diameter for your fireplace. Class A or triple wall pipe is for wood, coal and most fuels. Calculate the number and bends of chimney pipe lengths required to complete the project.

    • 3). Carefully get on or next to your roof on a ladder to measure the pitch for the flashing. Place a 12-inch mark on a level and hold it horizontally at a level plane with the unmarked end next to the roof. Hold a ruler vertically and measure the distance from the roof to the mark on the level. For example, if that distance is 6 inches, your roof is a 6/12 pitch. Remove any construction material to allow the pipe to go through. Attach the flashing to the roof with nails and construction adhesive.

    • 4). Triple wall fireplace pipe connects with a locking mechanism built in at the bottom and top of each piece. Examine the pipe to determine the bottom and top. The wider end is the bottom and the narrower end is the top. Place each section so the base always overlaps the top of the previous section. The overlap decreases the chance of any rising exhaust gasses escaping the pipe. Attach the bottom of pipe to freestanding fireplace units by positioning it over the collar and twisting with your hands and locking it into place. Use fireplace flex tubing to connect the exhaust collar to the triple wall pipe on built in fireplace installations. Wrap the connections with fireplace tape. This piping on built in installations will be covered by drywall or other finish materials.

    • 5). Continue stacking piece upon piece in the same fashion until it protrudes from the flashing and through the roof. Use a metal pipe spacer if going through a ceiling or wall before the flashing. Extend the pipe at least 3 feet above the highest point where it passes through the roof. The top must be at least 2 feet higher than any part of the structure.

    • 6). Place the cap on top of the pipe and attach with sheet metal screws and a screwdriver.
