How to Apply for Unemployment Benefits in Alabama

    • 1). Visit the Alabama Department Of Industrial Relations website (see Resources). Click the "Unemployed Workers" button.

    • 2). Select the option to "Establish A New Or Reopen A UC Claim." Click "Continue" and "Proceed."

    • 3). Complete the online application by entering your name, contact information, date of birth, Social Security number, 18-month employment history, wage history and Alabama driver's license number (or Alabama State ID number).

    • 4). Apply for unemployment benefits by calling the Unemployment Compensation Telephone Claims Line at (866) 234-5382. A live claims representative will assist you in submitting an application. The office hours for the claims line are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    • 5). Wait to receive your benefits letter in the mail. The letter will state whether or not you are approved to receive benefits. It can take up to three weeks from the date of your application submission to receive your benefits letter.
