- 1). Browse the Internet for knitting pattern generator software. Recommended programs include the Knitting Pattern Generator (which is freeware knitting pattern creation software), Knit Visualizer (produced by Knit Foundry and available for purchase) and AranPaint+Plus (another program which must be purchased for a small fee).
- 2). Download and install the software. This may take some time, and can only be accomplished if you have download and install permissions on the computer you are accessing.
- 3). Start the program of your choice.
- 4). Press the "Create Pattern" button which can be found in the upper left-hand corner of each program's window. Wait a moment for the interface to come up. Enter the desired length and amount of rows of the project.
- 5). Select individual boxes within the grid that pop up. You may either right-click to insert various knitting symbols, or use the separate interface at the top of the chart to insert symbols.
- 6). Color-code desired stitches using the highlight tool if desired.
- 7). Save your pattern. You may either print it out or view it on the computer as you knit for reference.
