How to Kill Wild Grapes

    • 1). Use a hacksaw to cut the wild grape vine off at the base. Grape vines may look quite slender, but they are very fibrous and may be difficult to cut. Work slowly and try to get as clean a cut as possible.

    • 2). Pull out the vines from their support system. Once the base has been cut off, you will be able to pull on the vines and disentangle them from their support system or the surrounding vegetation. Be patient and be prepared to untangle some tendrils by hand if they are particularly stubborn.

    • 3). Burn the vegetation. The vines and any flowers or fruit left on them should be destroyed to avoid having the vine propagate again. Place them in a steel or metal barrel, pour lighter fluid over them and light the fire. Do not leave this fire unattended.

    • 4). Pour herbicide over the base of the grape vine. Go back to the base you cut off and carefully pour your herbicide over the remainder of the grape plant. Do not splash the herbicide around and make sure you wear gloves and eye protection.

    • 5). Cover the base with landscaping fabric and secure the fabric down. You can also use a tarp if you do not have landscaping fabric. The fabric is used to block sunlight from the plant and help it die out completely. Secure the fabric with a layer of mulch and use bricks on the sides to further weigh it down. Wait at least two weeks before removing the fabric or tarp. Repeat the entire process for any remaining wild grape vines.
