- 1). Connect the abrasive hose to the hose fitting that is usually located underneath the gun, and tighten the provided clamp. Connect the opposite end of the hose to the abrasive outlet on the sandblasting unit, and tighten the provided clamp. For power washer sandblasters, the opposite end of the abrasive hose is directly inserted into the blasting media.
- 2). Attach the air hose from a compressor to the quick-connect hose fitting located on the base of the gun handle, or attach the water hose from a power washer to the quick-connect hose fitting.
- 3). Fill the drum with the blasting material. Some units will have a filter that is placed on top of the drum before the material is poured into the sandblaster. Use the filter if your sandblaster has one. Insert the probe wand into the blasting material on a power washer sandblasting unit. The probe wand is on the opposite end of the abrasive hose that is attached to the gun.
- 4). Turn on the compressor, and do not allow it to reach a level more than 150 psi. The psi level is the pounds of pressure per square inch being forced through the sandblaster. Too much psi will cause damage to the surface you are cleaning. Turn the pressure control knob on the compressor to the left to reduce the psi level. If you're using a sandblaster powered by a power washer, connect a water hose to the water inlet on the power washer, and turn on the water. Start the power washer only after the water is turned on.
- 5). Put on safety goggles and a dust mask. For better protection, wear a face shield and dust mask. Be sure to wear a long-sleeve shirt and long pants. The blasting material will bounce back off of the surface you are blasting and hit you.
- 6). From a distance of at least 3 feet, aim the gun at the surface to be blasted. Squeeze the trigger. Hold the gun at a 30-degree angle and move it back and forth, or up and down, in a sweeping motion. Do not hold too close, or in one spot, for too long. This will cause damage to the brick, stone, or concrete surface. Move in closer a little bit at a time if the material being blasted is not coming clean (Reference 2).
- 7). Thoroughly clean all parts before storing, or returning to the tool rental store. The instructions will tell you which parts must be cleaned, and how to clean them. Most are simply rinsed off and dried.
