- 1). Place a canvas on an easel, which will allow you to paint more easily.
- 2). Squeeze your paints onto a palette.
- 3). Paint the surface of the canvas with white paint. Allow it to dry. This will create a smooth surface on which to paint the actual painting.
- 4). Add the basic shapes of the painting onto the prepped canvas using a wide brush and dark colors. For example, if painting a mountain scene, paint all of the basic shapes like mountains, tree and cabins using the darkest colors that they have in them.
- 5). Add lighter colors onto the shapes to add highlights using a medium-sized brush. By adding a lighter color with a medium brush, you can make the cabin shape look as though it has boards, and can make the mountain look as though it has snow.
- 6). Add details using a thin-tipped brush and very light colors. By using a thin brush, you will be able to be as precise and detailed as you want, such as adding pine needles onto trees or nails into the wood of the cabin.
- 7). Allow the paint to dry before displaying your painting.
