- 1). Take down existing room decor -- such as photos on the walls and candles on a dresser -- and place everything on the floor.
- 2). Retrieve unused decorations from storage and items from throughout the house that you want to incorporate into the room you're designing.
- 3). Select the wall art you want to feature. This should be easier now that you have a clean slate to work with and a floor full of pieces to choose from. If lacking large pieces, position a handful of small paintings or photos close together to create the illusion of a larger piece.
- 4). Rearrange your books by color or size to add uniformity, if your room will have a shelf or bookshelf filled with books. Try stacking several piles of books vertically rather than horizontally on different levels of the bookshelf. Place a candle or small object on top of the vertical stacks.
- 5). Select decorations to place atop furniture or on the floor.
