- 1). Qualify as a postsecondary institution. Check state law to determine the requirements for registering a postsecondary institution. Even public high schools do not meet the requirements for an EDU domain. Foreign colleges or institutions of higher learning must incorporate or receive other official recognition from a US federal or state government agency. Institutions outside the United States who qualify under this rule should contact EDUCAUSE at edu@educause.edu.
- 2). Receive a commission or other government recognition if qualifying as a system or district office. The office must have official government authorization to manage or govern other educational institutions. Each institution that falls under the management of the office must also receive accreditation and qualify for EDU domain registration. Submit the special application for system and district offices to receive authorization to request an EDU domain name.
- 3). Review the requirements for institutional accreditation. EDUCAUSE requires accreditation by an accrediting agency recognized by the Department of Education. Refer to the official list of accrediting agencies on the Department of Education website. EDUCAUSE accepts accreditation from the national, regional and specialized accrediting bodies. EDUCAUSE also accepts some state accrediting bodies.
- 4). Visit the individual websites of the agencies to learn about their accreditation eligibility requirements. Determine which bodies can accredit the institution. Regional bodies may provide accreditation only for that regional area. Review the requirements and take steps to qualify for accreditation.
- 5). Gather the required documentation that shows institutional standing and accreditation. Search for the desired domain name and complete the registration process. Provide all documentation as requested.
