How to Grow Moss on Bare Soil

    • 1). Collect some moss from the ground. Many moss species exist and they grow in a range of conditions. As such, moss from the soil will probably grow well on your patch of bare soil. You may be able to find moss more easily on the north side of buildings. Alternatively, you can buy some moss from a garden center.

    • 2). Place 1 tsp. of sodium polyacrylate in a container, add 1 cup of water and leave it to soak for five to 10 minutes. The sodium polyacrylate soaks up water so it can help the moss stick to the bare soil and provide moisture. You can get sodium polyacrylate from garden centers where it is often sold as potting soil or pretreatment for bare-root plants. Sodium polyacrylate also serves to absorb moisture in diapers and you can get it by cutting open the pad of a diaper.

    • 3). Combine 2 cups moss, 1 1/2 cups water, 1/2 cup beer and the soaked sodium polyacrylate in a blender. Blend them until you get a puree. The sugar in the beer helps moss adhere to the soil initially.

    • 4). Apply the moss paste to the bare soil surface with a paintbrush.
