Ian was Melissa's boyfriend that Spencer kissed during her sophomore year. After what happened with Wren, Spencer doesn't want Melissa, and especially her parents, to know that she'd kissed Ian the previous year.

When Ian comes back to town to coach Spencer's field hockey team, he and Melissa get back together and before long they are married and trying to have a baby. Spencer doesn't trust him.

The girls begin to suspect that Ian killed Alison when they see a video of the two of them, Alison being very flirty, in the woods. Then the camera falls, choking noises are heard, and Alison's hand falls into the frame.

They try and set Ian up by offering to sell the video to him, but he sends a messenger, so is not arrested. Meanwhile, he's in the church chasing after Spencer. He tries to kill her and would have succeeded if a hooded person hadn't come in the bell tower and pushed him. He got tangled in the ropes by his neck. The girls rush to Spencer's aid and they all see Ian hanging from the bell ropes, but when they bring the police in, Ian's body is gone.
