How to Remove Older Incandescent Light Fixtures

    • 1). Turn off the power to the circuit the light is on by removing the fuse or switching the circuit breaker to the "off" position. Switch off the switch that controls the light.

    • 2). Remove the light bulb cover, or globes. Covers that enclose the entire bulb, or bulbs, often have a decorative nut at the center that can be turned counterclockwise to remove. Fixtures with single bulbs may have a bulb cover that unscrews from the fixture base. Some fixture bulb covers may be removed by simply pulling down on them to free them from clamp-like prongs.

    • 3). Remove the light bulb, or bulbs.

    • 4). Locate the two slotted screws in the base of the fixture. These will be opposite each other and will protrude through slots with larger holes at either end.

    • 5). Loosen the slotted screws. The fixture should move away from the ceiling as the screws are loosened. If not, use the razor blade knife to cut through paint buildup where the base meets the ceiling.

    • 6). Turn light base counterclockwise until the slotted screw heads line up with the holes at the ends of the slots. Then pull down to free the base from the screws.

    • 7). Test for voltage at the wires. If voltage is still present check that light switch is off, and/or that the correct fuse or circuit breaker has been disconnected or turned off. If power is still present at the fixture, stop. Call an electrician.

    • 8). Disconnect the fixture wires from the building wiring and remove the fixture.
