The land of 10,000 lakes offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventure. A multitude of campgrounds surround Minnesota's lake shores, providing waterfront views and wooded retreats. Campfires are a prerequisite for any inhabitants of these wilderness outposts. Wherever you visit in Minnesota, it seems a campground is close by. To experience all that Minnesota campgrounds have to offer, check out these gems for a true Minnesota camping experience.

    Myre-Big Island

    • Bordering the serene expanse of Albert Lea Lake in Southern Minnesota, Myre-Big Island Park offers a variety of options for campers seeking an outdoor experience. There are two campgrounds to choose from. Prairie grass surrounds the more modern facilities, while wooded solitude can be found on the 116-acre Big Island peninsula. The park is laced with interloping Oak savanna, prairie grasslands, marshes, and maple and basswood forests. More than 90 drive-in sites are available for casual campers. Four backpack sites are waiting to reward determined hikers with a serene lakeside setting on the outer banks of Albert Lea Lake. The 16 miles of hiking trails are suitable for day-hikers looking to explore a variety of landscapes.

    Tettegouche

    • About 60 miles north of the port of Duluth on Lake Superior's North Shore, Tettegouche State Park is a well-traveled wilderness. Even though constant crowds stop to admire the cliff-top views along the scenic highway, there are plenty of undiscovered vistas left for the hearty few who travel the inland trails. Over 20 miles of hiking trails traverse the Sawtooth Mountains to reveal nine inland lakes and towering waterfalls along the Baptism River. A sparse 28 sites accommodate RVs. Adventurous campers will find their respite in five remote backpack sites, 13 cart-in sites, six walk-in sites, or five kayak accessible sites. Two group camps can accommodate up to 35 people each.

    Bear Head Lake

    • With 73 sites among a towering birch and pine forest, you wouldn't expect Bear Head Lake State Park to provide seclusion for campers. But the wilderness that surrounds Bear Head Lake in northern Minnesota is about as remote as camping comfort-seekers are allowed to go. Situated at the fringe of the million-acre Boundary Waters Canoe Area wilderness, where no roads or motors are provided, Bear Head Lake offers campers access to a pristine camping experience. Four backpack sites offer campers an opportunity to traverse rugged terrain in search of a secluded lakeside outpost. Two canoe-accessible sites provide a chance to sleep among moose, black bear, and timber wolves. Fish are always at the ready in Bear Head Lake's variety of waters.
