- California requires $15,000 of insurance for death of injury of a single person in any one accident. It requires a $30,000 minimum for all those involved in any one accident.
- The minimum property liability is $5,000 for any one accident.
- A person can meet these regulations in one of four ways: showing proof of an active insurance policy; depositing $35,000 with the DMV; having a certificate of self-insurance issued by the DMV for those who own fleets of 26 or more vehicles; or obtaining a $35,000 surety bond from a California-licensed insurance company.
- Drivers under California's alternative insurance have different regulations. Bodily injury liability per person is $10,000, bodily injury liability per accident is $20,000 and property damage liability per accident is $3,000.
- In the State of California, comprehensive coverage, uninsured motorist, collision insurance and medical payments are not required.
