• Programs feature training in X-ray screening and monitoring, using walk-through and hand-wand metal detectors, how to recognize improvised explosive devices (IEDs) or homemade explosives. Organizations such as the National Sheriffs Association (NSA) hosts training throughout the United States. Training includes operations needed in planning for high risk and high profile trials, courtroom security standards and planning for emergency events.
  
  

Types

• Smaller local and county court CSOs are usually trained on the job. Some larger city and county governments require CSOs to complete peace officer training. Federal courthouse security officers are trained through their employment with one of three security vendors for the United States Marshals Office -- AKAL Security, MVM and Areas Group.
  
  

Considerations

• There are no requirements to take a courthouse security training course. Individuals who opt to complete the training work as CSOs and possess a background in law enforcement, armed and unarmed security or the military.
