- Family Tree Maker by Ancestry is genealogy software designed to organize and gather family history information while building a family tree. It easily integrates with the Ancestry website, and is able to utilize Ancestry's online printing service to create family history books and family tree posters.
- After opening the software, the user will find seven different workspaces, as indicated in the menu bar that runs along the top of the screen. The workspaces include: Plan, People, Places, Media, Sources, Publish and Web Search. By clicking the "Plan" tab, the Plan workspace will open. This is where the user will begin to create a family tree. To start, information is added about one person, including that person's name, birth date and any other known information. From that person other family members can be added, such as parents, spouses or children. Adding new family members will add branches to the family tree.
- The People tab will take the user directly to a screen to edit information about family members who were added in the first workspace. The Places workspace will help the user better identify proper place names. The geographic information that was added in the previous workspaces, such as birth places, will show up on the map, in this section, providing a visual. The Media workspace is the section to add photographs and documents. The Publish workspace will allow the user to take the information that has been entered, and create reports, family trees and charts. This section will also allow the user to connect to the Ancestry website and use the printing service. The last workspace is Web Search. This section will help the user search for information online, searching records at Ancestry, Rootsweb and Genealogy sites, as well as other online sources. The program makes it easier to capture and save online information and photographs.
