Safety Chic - Protecting Yourself While Working Outdoors

Working outdoors either as a homeowner or a professional can expose you to dangers and possible injuries.
Outdoor power tools have many fast moving, sharp parts, not to mention all of the debris and objects that can fly through the air.
Proper safety gear and protection can minimize the risks involved with lawn and garden maintenance.
Head protection
  • Regardless of the weather, you need to protect your head.
A hat with a brim of some kind can protect against the sun.
  • For areas with the potential to kick up a lot of debris, a helmet and face grid is suggested.
  • Eye protection should always be worn.
  • For loud equipment, use ear plugs so that you do not permanently damage your hearing.
  • When using pole pruners or any other kind of equipment where debris may fall down, using a hard hat or landscaper's helmet can prevent head injury from tree limbs, palm fronds and other dangers.
Limb protection
  • The appropriate gloves for the job should always be worn.
Not only do gloves protect your hands from blisters, they also can protect fingers from sharp instruments, prevent scratches and minor burns.
  • Forearms should be protected by pads or long sleeves if working in hedges or large bushes.
  • Leg protection with shin guards is very important when using trimmers, an edger, brush-cutters and mowers.
  • Full leg chaps and heavy duty thigh protection is a must for using chainsaws.
Most major injuries caused by chainsaws could have been prevented by wearing chaps.
Equipment shields and protection
  • Trimmers and other equipment come with a safety guard that helps to reduce the amount of debris that is kicked up.
These guards should never be removed.
If it becomes damaged, equipment repair centers can replace it.
  • Riding mower roll-over protection systems (ROPS) should always be in the full upright position while in use.
This system acts like a roll-cage on a racecar.
It is specifically designed to protect the operator if the mower were to roll over or fall.
The large commercial mowers are very heavy and can crush the operator.
Some mowers also have a seat-belt system.
Just like your car, the seat-belt should be used.
  • Emergency engine cut-off switches, ignition interlock system and other controls should never be tampered with.
The manufacturer that creates those controls must follow strict safety guidelines as set down by governing bodies.
These controls are designed for your safety.
  • All equipment should be kept in the original operating condition.
  • Keep the equipment well maintained with regular service.
Consumable parts such as blades and filters should be checked frequently.
Sharpen the blades for a cleaner cut.
Clean the equipment so that dirt and dust does not accumulate and cause an issue.
By following these guidelines, you can protect yourself and your equipment for the safest operation.
Start a trend by using the appropriate safety garb for the job.
You can always replace your equipment, but your health and safety are irreplaceable.
