- 1). Plant twisting and twining vines, such as clematis, silver fleece flower and honeysuckle, at the base of a fence. These types of vines climb and spread out over fences, often growing 20 or more feet in just one year. Space vines at the closest recommended spacing for quicker coverage. Prune properly for the best growth and flowering, which varies among the vines.
- 2). Plant a hedge in front of a fence. Compare the mature height of the shrubs to the fence height before selecting the right ones for your landscape. Remember shrubs that have the potential to grow much taller than the fence usually can be pruned to remain compact, if desired. Also, consider how fast the shrubs grow, especially if you are in a hurry to hide your fence. For year-round coverage, choose evergreen shrubs. Shrubs to consider to grow along a fence are lilacs, redosier dogwoods, common boxwoods and junipers.
- 3). Plant flowers in front of a fence, selecting taller varieties to grow nearest the fence. Flowers that often grow 6 feet or more include cannas, boltonias, sunflowers and delphinium. If you desire a garden that requires less maintenance, plant flowers native to your area.
- 4). Grow a container garden to hide a fence. Choose containers of all shapes, colors, textures and sizes, including large ones. Containers give additional height to flowers that are shorter in stature, too. Another option is to place containers on tiered risers or on bricks strategically laid out.
