Cures for Stage Fright

    Deep Breaths

    • Taking deep breaths just before a person has to perform or speak causes the diaphragm muscle to expand, thereby opening up the lungs and increasing oxygen intake. Studies have shown that an increased oxygen flow can trigger a relaxation response in the body, lower blood pressure and increase healthy energy levels.

    Focus

    • It can help to ease nerves if a person will focus on the speech or performance, rather than worry about the possibility of doing poorly. If a person can concentrate on the material--information with which he should already be comfortable--it will be easier to connect with the audience in a more positive, rather than negative, state of mind.

    Audience Interaction

    • A person who fears public speaking or performing might instinctively withdraw from the audience, trying to avoid spectators altogether. However, interacting with the audience can actually help to put a person at ease and make the crowd seem less intimidating. Remember that audiences generally want the performer or speaker to do well and so will usually be enthusiastic.

    Practice

    • The more comfortable a person is with her material before presenting it, the easier it will be to overcome feelings of anxiety. Practice the speech or performance first alone, and then before gradually larger audiences until the words and actions become second nature.

    Release of Nervous Energy

    • Running in place for a few moments or shaking one's arms and legs can release nervous energy that might otherwise make a person shake or feel faint once on stage. Also, the act of exercising, even if it's just for a brief amount of time, releases endorphins in the body that act as natural pain relievers and have a calming effect.

    Medications

    • If, after making every effort to overcome stage fright by way of natural methods, a person still has an overwhelming fear of speaking or performing before an audience, she should discuss with a doctor the types of anti-anxiety drugs on the market. Medications should be a last resort, however, as they can become addicting.
