The Netherland Dwarf Rabbit can be born many different colors and combination of colors. The American Rabbit Breeders Association recognizes twenty-five color varieties among the dwarf bunnies, a number that has risen since the twentieth century. The different colors of rabbit are often divided into five groups: Self, Shaded, Agouti,Tan-Patterned, and Any Other Variety (AOV). Eye color also is reflected by the color of rabbit. - The Self group of Dwarf Rabbits is primarily made up of solid colors without patterns on their surfaces or faces. The color and eye color combinations include: Ruby Eyed White, Blue Eyed White, Jet Black with brown eyes, Blue with blue/gray eyes, Chocolate with brown eyes, and Lilac with bluish-gray eyes.
- The Shaded Dwarf colors look as if they were colored in with shading pencils. These rabbits have darker markings on their ears, around their eyes, on the tips of their tails, and on their back legs. A few colors in this group include: Sable Point, Siamese Smokey Pearl, Tortoise Shell, and regular Siamese.
- Agouti Dwarf colors are recognized for the banding and ticking in the fur. Banding is a ring pattern seen when one blows in the fur, and ticking means that the top of each hair is a different color than the fur. Colors include: Chestnut, Opal, Chinchilla, Squirrel, and Lynx.
- Tanned-Patterned Dwarf Rabbits have unique coloring features that set them apart from the other Dwarf Rabbits. They usually have a primary color on the surface and body, with a much lighter under color. They have the under-color rings around their necks and under their bellies. Some colorings include: Otters (in all colors), Sable Marten, Black Silver Marten, and Tans (in all colors).
- The AOV section is for Dwarf Rabbit colorings that are very special and also uncommon. Some of the most unusual colorings are: Fawn, Himalayan (in all colors), Steel, Orange, and Broken. The Broken pattern covers a variety of patterns that are "broken" with white spots.
