- To get rid of a few bees nesting in the ground, make a solution of warm soapy water using 1/3 cup of liquid detergent and 1 gallon of water and pour it into the holes. The mild chemicals in the soap are an effective killer of most insects, and do not harm pets. To kill a swarm of bees, use the solution in a garden sprayer and wear protective clothing. Always hire professionals to remove bee colonies.
- A favorite of dog owners is the Mountain Dew solution. Pour a can of Mountain Dew into a bowl and add a few teaspoons of dishwashing liquid. Place the bowl in an area frequented by bees. The bees are drawn to the sweet liquid but, when they get too close to the liquid, they become trapped in the dish soap and drown.
- Boric acid is a mildly acidic crystalline dust made from borax, which is used mainly as a gentle antiseptic. Mined in the Mojave desert, borax has been used as an insecticide since 1922. The dust sticks to the legs and bodies of the bees and, once carried into the hive or nest, it poisons the bees. Sprinkle a layer of boric acid on the ground around the bees' nest and at the entrance to the hive. Boric acid is used in medicines for humans and animals, and is completely harmless to pets.
- Pyrethrum is a natural insecticide made from chrysanthemum flowers. For more than 200 years, the dried crushed flowers have been used to control flea infestations, and the substance is still one of the main ingredients in flea control products. It is a safe and environmentally friendly insecticide that is effective against a wide range of pests. It has a very low toxicity level if ingested, and is able to be used as an insecticide right up to the day of harvest. Infuse the dried flowers in water and spray it on bee nests.
- Neem oil is derived from the seed of the neem tree, which is native to eastern India and Burma. The oil has been used for both pest control and medicinal purposes for thousands of years in India. The product is antiseptic and used in both human and pet medications. Mix 5 ml of neem with 1 to 2 ml insecticidal soap and 1 liter of warm water for good distribution.
