How to Replace the Pump on a Kenmore Dishwasher

    • 1). Turn off the power to your Kenmore dishwasher. The majority of home dishwashers are hard-wired into the home circuit and will need to be turned off at the main circuit breaker. Open the breaker and look for the switch that controls the dishwasher. Move the switch to the "off" setting. Prevent the switch from being turned on, while you are working on it, by placing a piece of masking tape across it.

    • 2). Inspect the sides of the dishwasher to locate the screws that hold the panel beneath the dishwasher door in place. Remove these with a screwdriver and pull off the panel (the "kick panel"). You may also need to remove the "toe panel," which is located beneath the kick panel. The screws for the toe panel are usually placed in the front.

    • 3). Look for the underside of your Kenmore dishwasher pump. You will be able to see the water disposal hose clamped to the side. Loosen the clamp that holds the hose in place. Pull the hose off of the pump.

    • 4). Follow the electrical wires from the dishwasher wiring harness to where they meet the pump. These are usually plugged into the side of the pump with a plastic socket device. Grab the socket with a pair of pliers and pull back to remove the plug.

    • 5). Open the door of your dishwasher. Remove the lower dishwasher rack. Look for the pump opening located near the center of the dishwasher in the lowest part of the cabinet. Loosen the screws that hold the pump in place with a socket wrench.

    • 6). Pull the dishwasher pump and seal out of the bottom of your Kenmore dishwasher. Attach a new seal to the top of the replacement dishwasher pump. Slip the pump into place on the underside of the dishwasher. With your free hand, reach up and thread the pump bolts into the pump through the bottom of the dishwasher cabinet. Once the pump bolts are all in place, tighten them with the socket wrench.

    • 7). Reconnect the dishwasher pump hose and secure it with the hose clamp. Press the dishwasher wiring plug back into place.

    • 8). Replace the kick panel and toe panel, if needed. Secure them with their screws.

    • 9). Restore power to your Kenmore dishwasher.
