If you look at the structure of a band, the most common one will have two or three guitar players.
One will use a bass guitar and will play the bass lines and the other two will be rhythm guitar and solo guitar.
Now if you are looking for guitar solo techniques this means that you are a bit familiar with playing guitar.
You can start learning solo techniques even at the beginning but it is best that you first know the most important scales.
The easiest scale you should start with is the minor pentatonic scale.
It has only five notes and you can learn it pretty fast.
When you learn all the positions you will know all the possible pentatonic scales, even the major ones.
By knowing the basic positions you will just use them as patterns and all you need to know for all the keys is the theory.
After you know how to do this you should experiment as much as you can by changing the key of scales and working your way around the fretboard.
The same thing applies when you learn the major and minor scales.
When you get used to these as well you could come up with your own solo techniques and you will also be able to understand techniques used by other guitar players a lot better.
Of course the fastest way to improve your playing is to "steal" licks from other guitar players, but if you play them the same way you will be just a cheap rip-off.
If you truly understand scales you will be able to use these licks in your own style and that's how you will rock! So the way you should proceed is to look for licks that you like or you think they might be interesting if you change them in your way.
When stumbling across a new lick you should learn from it, not just memorize it and play it exactly the same way.
By doing this you will be able to expand your vocabulary fast and you will have a much more interesting way of playing.
