Strictly Come Dancing - A Perspective

As this year's series of Strictly Come Dancing comes to an end for another year - with Liverpool model Abby Clancy and her partner being crowned champions of 2013 - the show's popularity continues to show no signs whatsoever of waning.
On the contrary, it continues to go from strength to strength, and invariably commands ratings which completely blow its nearest rival, The X Factor, completely out of the water.
So just what is it about Strictly Come Dancing that people love so much? Well, if you assumed the role of programme researcher and took to the streets with a microphone, asking the general public this question, doubtless you would receive all kinds of different answers.
Some might say they love the colourful and sexy outfits that the contestants wear when performing their dance routines.
Others might say they relish seeing their favourite celebrities trying their hand - fish-out-of-water style - at tripping the light fantastic.
And then there will be those who say they enjoy the general banter and humorous theatrics - especially from the effervescent, ever arm-waving Bruno Tavioli - that go on between the judges.
Generally, though, you would probably get the majority of people saying that it's a combination of all of these things and more.
Personally, I would be inclined to put myself in the latter category.
Also, being a big fan of Sir Bruce Forsyth (I grew up watching him in The Generation Game every Saturday night), I think that his presence as a co-host with Tess Daly injects that added sparkle into the show.
And as regards Tess, well, you can see that she certainly enjoys every single moment of being by this comedy legend's side.
And don't they bounce off each other well, from the moment they come onstage towards each other, with Bruce doing his little traditional showman dance (you've got to admire the man's versatility, and doddery he is NOT), to their closure of the show as they hold each other and tell us to "Keeeep Dancing.
" In regard to the judges on Strictly, they all make the show entertaining in their own individual way.
There is Craig Revel-Harwood's blunt Simon-Cowell-style of verbal delivery, whose cutting comments often raise many a derisive boo.
And then there is Len Goodman, Head Judge (and deservedly so too, given his many years experience in the art of ballroom dancing), who never fails to both impress and entertain at the same time with his tell-it-like-it-is but respectful verdicts, which are often punctuated with facetious wisecracks.
And of course there is Bruno, who never fails to raise a smile or two with his almost grand singsong mannerisms as he effusively heaps his opinion on the contestants.
Strictly Come Dancing is a show that just oozes glittering glamour and excitement, with its sparkly sequins, great line-up of celebrity contestants, and judges' banter.
It lights up Saturday night TV in the same way that shows like The Generation Game, Opportunity Knocks and New Faces used to light up the TV of days gone by.
So whether you love it or hate it, there can be no doubt that Strictly Come Dancing is here to stay on our TV screens for many, many more years to come.
