How to Remove Old Hardwood Floors

    • 1). Start by using your drill to remove the screws that hold the planks to the subfloor and joists. In some cases, especially with older floors, there aren't any screws to remove.

    • 2). Create some room to work with the pry bar by using a circular saw to cut along the length of the first board. This one may have to be torn out rather than gently lifted, but it will give you room to work on the rest.

    • 3). Insert the pry bar under the planking, working from the side with the tongue. Lift the board up and out, working along its length.

    • 4). Use a chisel and hammer to loosen any boards that have been glued down.
