Fishing tournaments have a bad reputation for being intense and high pressure events.
That is the main reason why many rookies forget everything they know, as soon as it begins.
They panic, forget the basics and pull out an experimental lure in desperation.
Does this remind you of your first tournament experience? A tournament is not the time or place to start hoping for a miracle, or to start experimenting.
It is time to get back to the basics of fishing the way you know how to, and managing your time wisely.
These 3 tips should help any rookie focus on what is important and what is not: 1.
Time Management - spending an abundance of time in one spot fishing "slower lures" is the first rookie mistake.
The only reason to stay in one spot is, if you are completely sure of the fish being there.
Even if the fish are biting you should slowly move down the shore to maximize your chances.
Stay no longer that 10-15 minutes, in any given location.
2.
Find Active Fish First - when you arrive at a new location, start by using lures that will generate a lot of reaction strikes.
It more critical that you find the fish first, that to reel them into the boat.
Knowing where the fish are is step one on your path to winning that trophy.
Cranks, Swimming Jigs, Spinnerbaits and Rattle Traps are the best lures to use to find active fish.
If you find that you are getting reaction strikes, then slow your boat down.
Start using the soft plastic lures, and work the area completely.
3.
Research the Lake - If this is the first time you are fishing this lake, it is important that you pre-fish for at least one day, preferably before the tournament.
This research will give you the most up to date snapshot of where the fish are striking.
Keep a journal and take notes about every fish you catch, this will help you establish a fish catching pattern.
