- Serum hCG is taken via a blood draw.
- A qualitative serum hCG is either positive or negative. A positive result indicates pregnancy. With a negative result there is no pregnancy.
- A quantitative serum HCG will measure the amount of hCG. This information can be used to predict gestational age.
- Abnormal results may be caused by miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, Hydatidiform mole or a multiple gestation, such as twins or triplets.
- The risks of receiving a serum hCG are the same as any blood draw: infection, bleeding, hematoma and fainting.
