What Is Serum HCG?

    Test

    • Serum hCG is taken via a blood draw.

    Qualitative

    • A qualitative serum hCG is either positive or negative. A positive result indicates pregnancy. With a negative result there is no pregnancy.

    Quantitative

    • A quantitative serum HCG will measure the amount of hCG. This information can be used to predict gestational age.

    Abnormal Results

    • Abnormal results may be caused by miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, Hydatidiform mole or a multiple gestation, such as twins or triplets.

    Risks

    • The risks of receiving a serum hCG are the same as any blood draw: infection, bleeding, hematoma and fainting.
