- 1). Create an account in the NETFILE system (see Resources). The NETFILE system allows users to file their Canadian tax return directly through the Internet. To register for an account in NETFILE, go to the “My Account” page, click the “Register” link and follow the on-screen instructions to enter your personal information.
- 2). Fill out your tax return using one of the programs that works with the Canada Revenue Agency’s NETFILE system. A list of approved programs appears on the Canada Revenue Agency website (see Resources). Save the completed return as a “.tax” file.
- 3). Return to the NETFILE system page. Click “Ready to File” in the navigational bar at the left of the screen. Press the button that says that you agree with the terms and conditions at the bottom of the page to be taken into the NETFILE system.
- 4). Type your social insurance number, your date of birth and your assigned access code into the boxes provided in the first step of the NETFILE system. The access code is listed on the main page of your income tax packet that you get from the Canada Revenue Agency.
- 5). Upload the “.tax” file that you created when you completed your tax return in the software in the second step of the NETFILE system. Continue to the third screen of the NETFILE system and read the text; no additional action is necessary on this page. Go to the fourth step and click the “I agree. File my return now” button to submit your return.
- 6). Print the confirmation page that comes up once your return is filed through NETFILE. If an error message appears on the screen, follow the on-screen instructions to correct the error and finish submitting your tax return.
- 1). Fill out your tax return paperwork that comes in the tax preparation package provided by the Canada Revenue Agency. Enter all of the required information regarding income and taxes paid; make all of the calculations on the form so that the return is completed before you call the TELEFILE system.
- 2). Call the TELEFILE system provided by the Canada Revenue Agency (see Tips). The system is open seven days a week from mid-February to the end of September each year.
- 3). Listen for the prompts to tell you what information to enter into the TELEFILE system. Enter the information requested using the buttons on your telephone. The TELEFILE system will request the access code provided in your tax packet.
- 4). Follow all of the prompts in the TELEFILE system, entering the information requested at each prompt. Once you have finished entering information into the system, follow the prompts to confirm that the information you entered is correct.
- 5). Wait for a confirmation number from the TELEFILE system. When TELEFILE tells you the confirmation number, write it down and place it with your tax return. This provides proof that you filed your tax return.
