Romantic Getaways in the Georgia Mountains

    Helen, Georgia

    • This tiny getaway is styled to look like a small German town. Go for Oktoberfest (which stretches for more than a month) or for the cabins and tubing on the nearby Chattahoochee River. The downtown area features shops like the Scandinavian Import Company and German restaurants like the Edelweiss German Inn. Every year, the town sponsors a 10km run/walk called a Volksmarch. The town is also popular for its annual Christmas parade and local hot air ballooning companies.

    Wine Tour

    • Northern Georgia's Wine Highway features nine wineries throughout the North Georgia Mountains area. The annual Wine Highway Weekend offers a trip through seven of the wineries for tastings, tours and drawings to win free weekends at the wineries. If traveling around half the state seems too taxing, take a weekend in Dahlonega, Georgia, which features three of the state's vineyards. The nonprofit Winegrowers Association of Georgia has put together a site to make a decision on which winery is best for you simpler.

    The Overlook Inn

    • This rustic bed and breakfast overlooks two of north Georgia's best attractions--the Blue Ridge Mountains and Chattahoochee National Forest. Rooms feature fun names like "The Conquistador" (with a private rocking chair porch) and "The Moon Eye" (with a private hot tub). For those looking for something more rustic, the Overlook also offers a wilderness view cabin. A three-course "gourmet Southern breakfast" awaits couples, as do special packages like a fireplace breakfast and a backpacking lunch.

    Rafting on the Chattooga

    • Try the scenic rafting available on the Chattooga River, which runs along the state line with South Carolina. The river was used to film the classic movie "Deliverance" and offers varying difficulties. For woodsy romantics, Wild Water Rafting offers an overnight package that includes two days of rafting on the two most popular stages of the river and a camp out with steak dinner.
