- Whirlpool makes several types of dryers. You can opt for an electric dryer that utilizes your home's electrical connection to generate heat for drying your laundry or a gas dryer that uses gas heat to dry loads. Whirlpool also offers washer-and-dryer combination appliances in both electric and gas variations to save space in a smaller laundry room. You can also opt for energy-efficient models that utilize up to 40 percent less energy than traditional dryer options.
- Whirlpool dryers should be installed with a rigid or flexible metal vent. Rigid metal vents offer the best results, because they are less susceptible to kinking and crushing. If you use a flexible metal vent, make sure that it is supported and fully extended, to prevent damage. You should also be able to easily reach it for cleaning. Under no circumstances should you install your Whirlpool dryer with a metal foil or plastic vent. These types of vents may decrease airflow and pose a fire risk to your home.
- You should not dry rubber-soled shoes, such as tennis shoes or sneakers, in a Whirlpool dryer. Do not place foam rubber and other rubberlike materials, such as foam-backed rugs, in the dryer, either. The dryer's heat can melt the rubber, which may lead to a fire. Do not dry items that have been soaked or stained with flammable liquids such as dry-cleaning solvents or gasoline.
- Each time you finish a load in a Whirlpool dryer, you must clean the lint trap or screen. Leaving lint in place can slow drying times and present a fire hazard. Approximately every five years, replace the inlet hose, which may begin to show signs of wear and tear. If you notice tears, kinks, bulges or other damage sooner than five years, replace the hose immediately. To ensure that your laundry remains clean after a spin in the dryer, periodically clean the interior. Dampen a rag with a nonflammable liquid cleaner and wipe down the interior. Place a couple of clean towels in the dryer, and run a cycle to dry the drum.
