Boudoir Photography Tips

    Choosing a Photographer

    • Any old photographer just will not do. Boudoir photography is a specialized art form that requires different lighting, editing and people skills than standard portrait work demands from a photographer. Choose someone who specializes in boudoir photography and whose work you love. Make sure you have a great rapport with each other.

    Makeup

    • Exfoliate your skin the day before your shoot to ensure your complexion is smooth and silky. False eyelashes make your eyes pop on film, and they create a dramatic bedroom look when topped with black eyeliner.

Give your cheeks a bit of suggestive flush with a cheek stain. Make your lips look super plush by lining them with a pencil close to your natural lip color and filling in with a shiny gloss.

Do not forget a manicure and pedicure. Chipped or dull nails can ruin an otherwise perfect look.

If you do not have a tan, consider getting a light spray tan or using self-tanner several days prior to your shoot. A darker skin tone can help hide a multitude of common body issues, including cellulite and varicose veins.

    Hair

    • If you have medium-to-long hair, wear it down during your boudoir shoot. Shiny, cascading hair looks sexy and will give you lots of ways to pose: Running your fingers through it, twirling it innocently or fanning it out over a pillow are just a few ideas.

Short hair can look alternately spunky and sophisticated. Try out different styles during your shoot for a fun contrast of your multiple sexy sides.

    Wardrobe

    • What you wear right before your shoot is just as important as what you wear during the session. Arrive in loose clothing with no elastic bands, tight seams or anything else that could leave pressure marks on your body.

Select lingerie and other items of clothing that are form-fitting. Loose or draped clothing does not photograph well in a boudoir session.

Look for matching bra-and-panty sets, snug tank tops, boy shorts, thigh-high stockings, flirty nighties, athletic jerseys of your fiance's favorite team or even one of his dress shirts worn with bikini bottoms.

Don't forget the shoes. Bring at least one pair of high heels with you, preferably black.

    Location

    • Some photographers have special sets in their studios for boudoir photography. Other photographers shoot on location only. If this is the case, you could shoot in your home or the home of a friend. Many women choose to rent a room in an upscale hotel for the shoot. Wherever you choose, make sure the room is uncluttered and simple, and the bedding or upholstery is neutral.
