- 1). Plant your avocado tree in an area that receives full sun exposure to give it the best chance of producing fruit. If your tree is already established, prune away other plants that potentially block the rays.
- 2). Feed your tree with an organic, balanced nitrogen-phosphorous-potassium (N-P-K) fertilizer after it is at least one year old. Follow the instructions on the container to know when and how much to apply to your avocado tree.
- 3). Keep the soil under the avocado tree moist, but not so wet that it becomes waterlogged. Stick a moisture meter in the ground to obtain a reading that tells you if your tree is properly hydrated.
- 4). Refrain from using animal or insect repellents that contain non-organic chemicals. Instead, wrap the base of your tree in a tin trunk wrap to make it too slippery for rodents, such as rats and squirrels, and spray the leaves of the tree with your garden hose's high pressure water setting to dislodge any insects like caterpillars and snails.
- 5). Apply an organic mulch, such as dried leaves or grass clippings, to the base of your tree in lieu of weed killer. A mulch prevents weeds and other plants from spreading around your tree, which steal vital nutrients.
