- 1). Measure how far your chosen tree is from the nearest electrical outlet. You will need an extension cord or cords long enough to reach from the base of the tree to the outlet.
- 2). Unravel your lights from the box or container. Plug them in to test the light bulbs. Replace any light bulbs that appear burned out.
- 3). Carry your lights outdoors and place them next to your tree. Bring a ladder if necessary to reach the top of the tree, and carry the end of the light strand up the ladder with you.
- 4). Position the end of the light strand near the top of the tree. Lay it on a branch and secure the end of the strand to the branch using a zip-tie. Do not over tighten the zip-tie or it will cut the light strand.
- 5). Toss the light strand around the tree, enlisting friends to guide the lights around the tree to avoid leaving the ladder. The lights should form a spiral around the tree.
- 6). Step down a rung or two on the ladder. Attach the strand to a branch close to you, using a zip-tie.
- 7). Hang and affix the lights to the branches in the same manner until you reach the bottom of the tree. You may have to add another strand of lights to the tree if you have more tree than lights.
- 8). Remove the ladder. Attach the heavy-duty extension cord to the end of the lights, and plug the opposite end of the lights into an outlet to view the effect.
