How to Get Something in the Upper Eye Lid Out of the Eye

    • 1). Wash your hands. The eye is a very delicate part of the body, and you do not want to get any dirt from your hands into it.

    • 2). Lift the upper lid gently with your finger. However, try not to touch the eye itself with your hands as it may become red and irritated.

    • 3). Flush the eye carefully with clean water. Ensure that the upper eyelid is lifted and that the water can access the surface of the eye typically concealed by the upper eyelid. Blink while the eye is immersed in the water.

    • 4). Look in the mirror. If you feel the object is still in your eye, try to locate it in the mirror. Again lift your upper eyelid. Look down to improve your viewing angle. Ask someone to help you locate and evaluate the foreign object.

    • 5). Get into the shower and put the eye under the running water. Keep the eye open, so the water can wash out the foreign object.

    • 6). Remove the foreign object with the corner of a clean cloth or a cotton swab while holding the upper lid open.

    • 7). Put on dark sunglasses. If the surface of your eye is injured, it may not fully protect your eye from the sun. Alternatively, cut the top part off of a paper cup and place the cup over the injured eye. If the foreign object is still in your eye, ask someone to take you to an ophthalmologist.
