"Johnny English" Breaks $100 Million Mark

Continuing its surveillance of 29 overseas territories, Universal Pictures and Working Title Films' "Johnny English," opening in North American theaters on July 18, today crossed $100 million in cumulative international box office receipts after 39 days in international release.

The film, which stars brilliant physical comedian Rowan Atkinson ("Bean," "Blackadder") as Johnny English and international star Natalie Imbruglia as Agent Lorna Campbell, has out-beaned "Bean," Atkinson's previous big screen hit in his native U.K., by grossing $24.8 million (the final gross of "Bean") after just 24 days in release.

"Johnny English" was the top-grossing film in the U.K. for three weeks in a row upon its release. With a cumulative U.K. gross of nearly $27 million, "Johnny English" has already passed "American Pie 2's" total box office to become Universal's 11th biggest release of all time in that territory.

Similar success stories follow English in other foreign markets, with the film performing strongly in Germany (number one at the box office during its first three weeks of release, with an $18 million cume-to-date), Mexico (a 31-day cume of more than $2 million), Austria (also number one three weeks running) and other territories. The hit comedy will open in 10 additional international markets in the coming weeks.

Rowan Atkinson stars as the title character in the spy comedy "Johnny English" -- an office-bound junior intelligence worker suddenly thrust into the spotlight when the Crown Jewels are stolen from the Tower of London and a plot is uncovered that threatens world security. A bit unseasoned but extremely enthusiastic, English is quickly outfitted with a highly-specialized automobile, armed with the ultimate in intelligence gadgetry and allowed highest access to the agency's files.

All of England's hopes are resting on English. He isn't the best they have ... he's the only one left.

Starring along with Atkinson as Johnny English are international star Natalie Imbruglia as Special Agent Lorna Campbell, renowned comedian Ben Miller as English's sidekick, Bough, and multiple Academy Award(R) nominee John Malkovich as the very French and very crafty business magnate, Pascal Sauvage.

From Working Title Films ("About a Boy," "Bridget Jones's Diary," "Notting Hill," "Four Weddings and a Funeral"), "Johnny English" is a spy comedy with thrills, chills and surprises for the whole family. Directed by Peter Howitt ("Sliding Doors") from an original screenplay by Neal Purvis & Robert Wade and William Davies, "Johnny English" is produced by Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Mark Huffam. The film is distributed worldwide by Universal Pictures.

Working Title Films has a long-term agreement with Universal Pictures. Universal Pictures in turn has an agreement with StudioCanal, whereby films produced by Working Title are distributed in the US through Universal Pictures and internationally through Universal and StudioCanal.
