- 1). Check to determine the extent of the damage to the paint job. If the paint color is still there, apply a coat of lacquer over the scratches and then wet-sand with sandpaper until the surface is smooth. Continue on if the damage is more extensive.
- 2). Sand the effected area of the guitar. Remove gloss finish so the paint will be able to stick. If you do not have the paint to match the rest of the guitar, sand the whole thing and apply a fresh coat of paint to the entire body. Use a chemical lacquer remover if necessary.
- 3). Remove the strings, hardware and neck of the guitar as necessary. You may need a screwdriver and/or an Allen wrench to remove the hardware and guitar neck. If you only need to conduct a spot repair, you may be able to avoid removing these pieces. If any possibility of overspray hitting a knob or pickup exists, however, cover them with masking tape or remove them until the new surface is dry.
- 4). Apply a coat of primer to the affected area. Use a paint sprayer if available or a can of aerosol spray paint.
- 5). Sand the primer coat lightly so the guitar surface is smooth.
- 6). Start spray painting the guitar with a paint sprayer or a can of aerosol paint. Apply many light coats of paint with the can or sprayer at least 12 inches from the guitar. Do not expect to get the the final color from one coat of paint. Multiple light coats will give you the right color but will minimize the possibility of runs or splotching. Allow ample time for each coat of paint to dry. Actual times will vary depending on the paint you have chosen.
- 7). Apply a coat of clear lacquer with the sprayer. When the lacquer has dried, reassemble the guitar; drying time will vary by manufacturer.
